Andrew Johnson

Andrew Johnson was our seventeenth president. He was born in North Carolina. He was born in 1808. His family was poor. Johnson worked for the common man when he grew up. He spoke out against the rich. He was in the House of Representatives. He was in the Senate. He represented Tennessee. Tennessee left the Union just before the Civil War. Johnson stayed in the Senate. This made him a hero in the North. This made the South unhappy. He was nominated as Lincoln's vice president. Johnson was a Democrat. Lincoln was a Republican. People thought they were both loyal men. This is why they ran together. When Lincoln was shot, Johnson became president. The Civil War had just ended. Johnson had to put the country back together. He found himself in conflict with the North and the South. It was hard to make decisions that would make both sides happy. Johnson fired his secretary .....
