Angel Island

Most people know about Ellis Island. It is on the East Coast. It was a stopping point for immigrants. Most of the immigrants were from Europe. What about Angel Island? It is on the West Coast. It was also a stopping point for immigrants. Most of those immigrants were from China.


Today, Angel Island is a part of California. It is in the San Francisco Bay. Long ago, Native Americans used the island. They used it for fishing. They used it for hunting. Years later it was used as a ranch. Cattle were raised there.


In 1910, Angel Island was used as an immigration station. Angel Island was like Ellis Island. It was called "The Ellis Island of the West." People from Europe came to the U.S. to find jobs. They came through Ellis Island People from China were looking for jobs, too. They came through Angel Island. Most people had to wait a few hours on Ellis Island. On Angel Island, the wait was longer. People from China had to wait weeks. Some had to wait months. Some waited years. They had to live there. They stayed in buildings. Immigrants from China said they felt it was like a jail.
