Avi

Avi is an author, against all odds. No one ever thought of him as being smart. He has a learning disability. He flunked out of the first high school he attended. Through all of this, he found something that he wanted to do. He wanted to be a writer. When he first started writing, he wasn't very good. He kept trying, though. Now, he is an award-winning author.

Avi was born in New York City in 1937. His twin sister, Emily, was born five minutes later. It was Emily who gave him the name Avi. She started calling him that when they were both about a year old. No one knows why. Nevertheless, the name stuck. Now, it is the only name he uses.

Avi came from a smart and talented family. His father was a doctor. His mother later became a social worker. His older brother went to college when he was fifteen. His twin sister Emily was smart, too. Until high school, she and Avi were always in the same class. Avi hated that. Next to Emily, he didn't seem very smart. Teachers thought he was sloppy. They said that he didn't pay attention. He often misspelled words. Sometimes, he reversed letters in the words he wrote. Later, he learned that he had a learning disability. It was the reason for many of his problems.
