Beatrix Potter

Beatrix Potter's birthday

Reading Comprehension for July 28

Who hasn't heard of Peter Rabbit? He was a silly little bunny who got himself stuck in Mr. McGregor's garden. Maybe you know about Tom Kitten, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, and Jemima Puddle-Duck, but do you know about Beatrix Potter? She's the one who created all those characters!

Beatrix Potter was born in the Kensington area of London, England, on July 28, 1866. Hers was a typical upper-middle-class Victorian family. They had a large house with several servants.

When she was old enough, she had a governess as her teacher. She rarely had contact with her parents except in the evening before bed. She spent hours alone and learned to amuse herself.

Beatrix was five years old when her younger brother, Bertram, was born. When he reached school age, he was sent away to boarding school, while Beatrix remained at home with her governess.
