Bill Brittain

Bill Brittain was an American author who wrote children's books. He began his career writing stories and always enjoyed mysteries. Brittain created a fictional New England village that became the setting for several of his most popular books. Children still enjoy Brittain's oddly mysterious books.

William "Bill" Brittain was born in 1930 in Rochester, New York. He was a teacher, but since teachers don't make much money, he later decided to try being a writer. At first, Brittain wrote for Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, a monthly magazine containing fictional mystery stories. Brittain wrote many stories for two series, which his readers enjoyed from 1964 to 1983.

Brittain's two popular series that appeared in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine are The Man Who Read and Mr. Strang. There are ten stories included in The Man Who Read series such as "The Boy Who Read Agatha Christie" (1966), "The Man Who Read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle" (1969), and "The Man Who Read G.K. Chesterton" (1973). The Mr. Strang series contains seventeen titles such as "Mr. Strang Examines a Legend" (1973), "Mr. Strang Interprets a Picture" (1981), and "Mr. Strang and the Purloined Memo" (1983).
