Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Canyons are carved by erosion. The Gunnison River has carved a canyon. It is in the southwestern part of Colorado. The area is now a national park. The park's name is Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.


This canyon is very narrow with steep sides. You can go rock climbing. Hikers can find different types of trails. There are easy routes. They go along the rim of the canyon. Do you like adventure? You can hike down to the river. This is a very challenging hike. When you reach the river, you will get to see its beauty up close. As you hike down the canyon to the river, there are chains to aid you. The chains help you safely lower yourself down the side of the canyon. All hikers and climbers need to watch out for falling and loose rocks.


Only experienced kayakers are allowed to kayak on the Gunnison River. It takes a lot of skill to safely kayak on this river. The water is very cold. You are not supposed to swim in it. In some places, you can fish for trout. There are special rules about fishing here. This will keep the waters full of fish for many years.
