Box Turtles

Have you ever seen a box turtle? They are common in the eastern United States. Box turtles have a round, dome-shaped shell. It is very hard. A box turtle can pull its head, legs, and tail inside its shell. It can also close up its shell. You can't see the turtle hiding inside. This protects the box turtle from animals that might try to eat it.


Box turtles are reptiles. They rely on the sun to stay warm. During the spring, summer, and fall, you will see box turtles out searching for food. Box turtles eat many things. They eat the roots, flowers, and berries of plants. They also eat insects, worms, and small animals, like fish, snakes, or frogs. During the winter, box turtles dig into the dirt.
