Boy, Oh, Boysenberry!

I love warm toast for breakfast. I really love it when it is covered with a thick layer of boysenberry jelly. Each morning I smooth the dark jelly over warm toasted bread until it nearly drips off the side. Then I run my finger around the edge of the toast and lick off the extra syrupy sweet jelly. Boy, oh, boy, do I love boysenberries! Boy, oh, boy, do I owe a big thank you to Mr. Walter Knott.


Mr. Knott helped to create boysenberries in 1932. He and his family lived in southern California. They were farmers during the Great Depression. This was a very difficult time in American history. Money and jobs were scarce. So was food. Mr. Knott and his family did all that they could to survive the tough economic times. A friend of Mr. Knott's was trying to grow some new berry plants. They were going to be a crossbreed of a red raspberry, a blackberry, and a loganberry. But rather than growing, the berries kept dying. Being the creative and determined man that he was, Mr. Knott asked if he could take some of the dying plants home. He nursed the plants back to health. They began to flourish. Soon, a brand new berry was born. Mr. Knott named them boysenberries .....
