Cold Weather Care

Some pets live in places where it gets cold. Cold weather can be dangerous for cats and dogs.

Cats that are outside will sometimes go to sleep under the hood of a car. In the winter, it is warmer there. This is dangerous for the cat. When a car motor is started, the cat can be hurt or killed by the motor or the fan belt. If there are cats where you live, bang loudly on the hood of the car before you start it. This will scare a sleeping cat and give it time to escape.

Snow makes it easier for a dog to get lost. Snow on the ground makes it hard for a dog to smell a trail. More dogs are lost during the winter than any other season. Always keep your dog on a leash. Make sure your cat and dog are wearing name tags so that if they do get lost, your pets can be returned to you.

After your dog comes in the house, wipe off its paws, legs, and stomach.
