Colin Powell

The highest office that an American can hold is that of President of the United States. Barack Obama became the first black American to be elected president. However, before that historic event, the highest office ever held by a black American was Secretary of State. Presidents choose a Secretary of State. The Senate votes to approve the choice. Colin Powell was chosen and approved in 2001. He held that office until January 26, 2005.


Colin Powell was born in Harlem. You might say he was born to be a leader. He entered the army after he grew up. He was a hero and received medals, including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. His military career lasted 35 years. He retired from the military as a four-star general.


President George W. Bush chose Powell for Secretary of State. This wasn't Powell's first government job, but it was the most important. The Secretary of State is the highest-ranking .....
