Consideration

Consideration is a five-syllable word that stands for an important character trait. Another word for consideration is respectfulness. People of all ages appreciate respectful behavior. The opposite of consideration is thoughtlessness. To be considerate of others is to put their wishes first.

There are three ways to show consideration for others. The first is to respect their property. It is inconsiderate and wrong to borrow items without asking the owner for permission. Always ask first and respond nicely if the answer is no. When you are allowed to borrow an object, you are considerate if you take good care of it and return it in the same condition as it was when you borrowed it. That means bike tires should be full of air and not flat when you return a borrowed bike. A book should not have stains, folds, or tears that weren't there when you first borrowed it. You should also use good manners and say thank you for being allowed to borrow that object.

The second way to show consideration is to be respectful of the feelings of others. That includes using language that shows respect rather than disrespect. There should be no name-calling. It would be wrong to tell hurtful jokes or share secrets that were meant for your ears only. It's important to think about the feelings of others before you speak or act in a way that may hurt or embarrass them.
