Craters of the Moon National Monument

In Idaho, you will find a unique landscape. It is called Craters of the Moon. It is a national monument. Here, the land looks like the surface of the moon. The area is actually a volcano. The volcano hasn't erupted in many years. The most recent eruption was 2,100 years ago. The volcano is not active today. Scientists predict that it will erupt again. They think this might happen in the next one thousand years.


The name of the park makes people curious. Some people want to visit just because of the name! There are many interesting things to see. There are many contrasts. In winter, the black lava flows contrast with the white snow. In spring, brightly colored wildflowers sprout up on the dry landscape. In spite of the harsh conditions here, many plants and animals live at Craters of the Moon.
