Many little girls like to pretend. They like to play dress up. Many pretend to be princesses. They dress in pretty dresses. They wear princess crowns. They wish to live in castles. Some even pretend to have princess power. For one young girl, her wish came true.


Diana Frances Spencer was born on July 1, 1961. She was born in Norfolk, England. England is a country in Europe. Her parents were known as Lord and Lady Spencer. There were five children in her family. Diana had two sisters. She had one brother. When Diana was young, her parents separated. Diana and her brother and sisters lived with their father.


In 1975, Diana's father became the eighth Earl Spencer. Earl is a title given to a British man. It is a title that tells his rank. An earl is above a lord. Diana became known as Lady Diana Spencer.
