Digging into the Past, Part 1

Ben and Alexa looked out the window of the dusty minivan. Then they looked at each other. Alexa moaned. This was not the vacation she had been expecting.

Every summer their father took them on a vacation for two weeks. He called it bonding time, but Alexa thought of it as boring time. After glancing out the window, she was convinced that this would be the very worst choice he'd made yet.

"Come on, Lex," Ben shoved her arm. "I know it looks bad, but sometimes what you see can be misleading."

Dad had already hopped out of the car. The two young teens followed suit. This dry, dusty piece of real estate had to have something going for it.

A man quickly approached. He wore a baseball cap, a white t-shirt, and jeans. He made small clouds of dust rise with his hands as he beat some of the dirt off his pants.

"Mr. Hewson?" he called to the group.

"Dr. Porter?" asked Ben and Alexa's dad in reply.

Both men nodded and held out hands for shaking. Then Dr. Porter shook hands with Ben and Alexa.

"I'm pleased to meet you folks. Why don't you grab your gear? I'll show you to your tents, and then I can give you the grand tour a little later."
