Dr. Phil McGraw

Phil McGraw

Reading Comprehension for September 1

Since September 2002, a bald, 6 foot 4 inch gentleman has been giving advice to a very large television audience on his own show. His name is Phil McGraw. He may not look like the usual TV star, but he has a large following. His advice and style of giving it are famous.

Phillip Calvin McGraw was born in Vinita, Oklahoma, on September 1, 1950. He graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School in Overland Park, Kansas. He received a football scholarship to the University of Tulsa. An injury ruined that dream. He instead graduated from Midwestern State University with a bachelor's degree in psychology. Psychology is the study of the human mind, how people think. He decided to continue his studies by working toward a master's degree in experimental psychology. He then went back to school for a doctorate in clinical psychology. He attended the University of North Texas for the last two degrees.

After his first marriage failed after three years, Phil married Robin Jameson in 1976. They are still together. They have two sons. Jay was born in 1979 and Jordan was born in 1986. Dr. Phil went into private practice for a while. In the early 1990s, he gave up private practice to start a new business venture. His company was called Courtroom Sciences, Inc. This firm worked with lawyers on cases going to court. Sometimes they helped the lawyers decide who would make the best jurors. Sometimes they gave the lawyers advice on the behavior of their clients. This business led Dr. Phil to the biggest break in his career.
