Dressing for the Weather

"You're going to freeze!" "Wear your warm coat." "Put a hat on." Sure, it sounds like nagging. But this is good advice from your mom.

Dressing warmly in the winter is important for your health. It might even save your life (and limbs). When the temperature dips to 32 degrees Fahrenheit or zero degrees Celsius, we say it is freezing. This is because water freezes at this temperature. Freezing temperatures can be dangerous.

When the weather turns cold, you need to pay attention to the wind chill. This is a measure of how cold the air really feels on your skin. When the wind blows, it takes the heat away from your body. This makes you feel colder. For example, if the air temperature is 20 degrees and the wind is blowing 15 miles per hour, it feels like -2 degrees on your skin. That's cold!

If your skin is not covered in very cold temperatures, you could get frostbite. At first, your skin will turn white and feel numb. This is called frostnip. Frostbite is a more dangerous condition. Your cells actually freeze. This could cause permanent damage. If the damage is severe, the frostbitten parts may have to be removed.
