Endorsing a Check

Kate met Josh at the bank. He wanted to deposit a check into his new checking account. He also wanted to get some cash back from it. Kate was teaching him how to use his new account.

Kate said, "First, you need to endorse the check you want to deposit."

"What does endorse mean?" Josh asked.

"When you endorse a check, you sign it on the back. This gives the bank permission to give you cash for the check. It proves that you are the person the check is payable to. We will give you money from our bank. Then we are paid back when we send the check to the bank of the person who wrote the check. That bank takes the money out of that person's account."
