Environmental Protection Agency

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is part of the federal government. Its focus is on improving America's environment. The EPA was established in 1970. President Richard Nixon suggested the idea for this agency. Before this time, there was not one single agency in charge of taking care of the environment. The EPA was given this huge task. The head of the EPA is called the administrator. The EPA is not a part of the president's cabinet. The administrator is often given the status of cabinet-rank. He or she advises the president on matters dealing with our environment.

The EPA was established because Americans were concerned about the quality of the environment. They wanted cleaner water, air, and land. The EPA was given the task of repairing past damage to the environment. They were also asked to write new guidelines in order to make a cleaner environment a reality.
