First a Poem For Kids, Now a Pledge to the Flag

Do you start your day with a poem? If you are one of the millions of school children in America, then you most likely do. Every school day children across the U.S. make their way to school. They come from the biggest of cities and the smallest of towns. Upon entering their classrooms, they hang up their backpacks and start their morning work. Then they stand and recite a poem. This "poem" is the Pledge of Allegiance. It is a special poem that was, in fact, written just for children. It was written by a man named Francis Bellamy. In 1892 it was published in a popular magazine for kids called The Youth's Companion. On October 12, 1892 school children across the country first recited this pledge. They did it to honor the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' trip to America.
