Forgiveness and Friendship

It hurt. Badly. How was Tamara ever going to get past this? More tears streamed down her face as she thought about the rejection from her best - well, formerly best - friend.

Tamara plopped down on the park bench and wiped her eyes. She looked up and began watching all the people who had come to the park that day. The park was very popular, as it was the only green space in several blocks of the large city. Tamara lived in an apartment just up the street. She often came here to enjoy the trees, the birds, the water fountains, and the pond. She loved to bring bread and feed the ducks.

While she pulled off small pieces of the white bread and tossed it to the quacking ducks, Tamara's thoughts traveled back to the recent argument she'd had with Jackie. Jackie and Tamara had hung around together for five years. Now, though, a new group of girls had taken a liking to Jackie and invited her into their group. They were stylish and popular, and Jackie accepted right away.

Last week, Tamara had seen Jackie with the group at school and ran up calling her name. "Hey, Jackie," Tamara had called. "Wait up!"

Jackie had looked briefly in Tamara's direction but quickly turned to her new friends. As Tamara approached the group, she heard one of them ask Jackie a question with a sneer. "Who is that girl?"

"Oh, it's someone I pass in the hall sometimes," Jackie had replied.

"Oh," the girl said, lifting her nose in the air. "She's kind of dorky, isn't she?"

At this point, Tamara had expected Jackie to defend her. But, she was shocked to hear, "Yeah, she is a bit, isn't she?" Then laughing, the entire group left while Tamara stood there, stunned. She had never been so hurt in her life.

While lost in her thoughts, one of Tamara's other acquaintances, Bonnie, sidled up next to her. "Hi, Tamara," she said.

Tamara didn't say anything. Bonnie tried again, this time tapping Tamara on the arm. "I said, 'hi,' Tamara."

"Huh? Oh, hi, Bonnie. Sorry. I was thinking."

"Obviously," Bonnie said with a grin. "What about?"
