Abraham Lincoln won the election in 1860. He would be the country's next president. Within weeks of the election, Southern states started to secede from the Union.


Fort Sumter is a fort in South Carolina. It sits on an island in Charleston Harbor. After South Carolina seceded from the Union, the governor of South Carolina demanded that the fort surrender. At the time, Union troops controlled the fort. A few months went by. Union troops were asked again and again to leave the southern fort. They refused.
