Fruit Food Group

Foods in the fruit food group help your body in many ways. Any fruit or juice made from 100% fruit juice is included in the fruit food group. Fruit can be fresh, canned, frozen, or dried. It can be eaten whole, cut-up, or pureed. Girls and boys ages nine to thirteen should eat 11/2 cups of fruit each day. One small apple or one large banana counts as one cup of fruit. One-half cup of dried fruit is equal to one cup of fresh fruit.

Eating fruit is a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth. It is also really good for your body. Fruits usually have a lower number of calories per cup than other types of foods. It is important to eat many different types of fruit because each fruit has different benefits. You may have heard the phrase "eat the rainbow" when it comes to fruits and vegetables. That is because different colored fruits and vegetables have different benefits. For example, red fruits, such as strawberries, have a lot of vitamin C. Oranges are high in vitamins A and C. Bananas are a good source of potassium and give you energy. Blueberries are a good source of antioxidants.
