Galapagos Penguins

Did you know that not all penguins live in cold places? Some kinds of penguins like warm places. The Galapagos penguin has its home on tropical islands near the equator. These islands are off the west coast of South America. The Galapagos penguin is the only one that has crossed the line of the equator. All other penguin species are only found in the southern hemisphere. Some of them can be found on Isabela Island a few miles north of the equator. It is quite a wonder how the Galapagos penguin can survive a hot and humid climate. But these penguins must like their island home because they do not migrate.


The Galapagos penguin is small. It grows to no more than twenty inches tall and weighs about five pounds. It is the smallest penguin living in warm areas. The Galapagos penguin has a white band that runs from the corners of its eyes down across its chin. An upturned horseshoe-shaped black strap wraps around its white belly. Fish is this penguin's favorite food. It also feeds on squid and crustaceans. Unlike other penguins, the Galapagos penguin doesn't have a specific breeding season. It mates whenever food is abundant.
