Gary of the Jungle

Youth Against Violence Day

Reading Comprehension for May 18

Gary of the Jungle swung from tree to tree. Snakes slid out of his way. Apes hid behind rocks. Tree frogs hopped into flowers. Why did the animals hide? They were scared of Gary. He was a bully. Everyone stayed out of his way.

When Gary was a baby, he was not a bully. It happened slowly as he grew older. He did not call himself a bully. He felt strong and brave. He wanted everyone to honor him. They should let Gary cut in line. They should let him play with the best toys. He should always go first on the swinging vines. He told everyone to call him "Gary the Great." Anyone who did not follow his rules would be sorry. Gary would make them cry.

Kevin and Tia were playing by a pool of water. Birds sang, and monkeys chattered. Then all noise stopped. The children heard leaves shaking and vines snapping. Oh no! Was that Gary?

Before they could run away, Gary landed in front of them. "Hello, babies," he said. "What are you doing?"

"We're not babies!" Kevin said.

"We're playing with this ball that my dad made," Tia said.

Gary's eyes lit up. "Hey, that looks nice! Give it to me!" He reached for Tia's ball.

"No! You can't have it!" Tia said, putting it behind her back.
