A Newfoundland is a breed of dog. A breed is a kind or a type of animal. Newfoundlands are large. They can weigh up to 150 pounds. They are usually black. Their heads are large. They have square noses. Their ears are small triangles. They have small, dark eyes. They are gentle. They are called "gentle giants."


Newfoundlands are great swimmers. Their webbed feet help them in the water. The dogs are known for rescuing people from the water. Newfoundlands are very strong. They have been used to haul lumber. They have worked with fishermen to pull in nets. Fishermen used them to pull boats to shore. They have also been known to deliver milk and carry heavy loads. Contests are held to see how much Newfoundlands can pull. On July 20, 1979, a record was set in Washington. A Newfoundland pulled a load that weighed 97 pounds.
