George Washington, the Farmer

You probably have learned about George Washington as the father of our country. This versatile man had many other interests. He liked to dance. He was an excellent horseman, and he loved being a farmer!

George Washington had a lot of land in Virginia. His property was divided into six plantations. He had a person in charge at each place. This person was called an overseer. Mr. Washington visited every plantation each weekday to check on them. He rode his horse at a fast canter from farm to farm. It was a twenty-mile round trip. Sometimes he even worked in the fields with his men. Maybe that was when he needed a break from being in the saddle so much!
