Grace Kelly

Grace Kelly

Reading Comprehension for November 12

Do you know what you want to be when you are grown? What do your parents think of your plans? Do they support your decision? What are you prepared to do to follow your dream? From the time she was a little girl, Grace Kelly had a dream.

Grace Kelly was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 12, 1929. Her father was a self-made millionaire and had been an Olympic gold medalist as a sculler (a kind of boat rowing). Her mother had been a women's athletic coach at the University of Pennsylvania. Grace and her siblings were constantly surrounded by enthusiasm for sports. They didn't mind, but Grace had other interests.

From a young age, Grace loved to perform. She acted in school and community plays. Along with her mother and sister, she also did some modeling. Her uncle, George Kelly, was a prize-winning playwright. He encouraged Grace to become a professional actor against her parents' wishes.

When Grace graduated from high school, she attended the Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. To pay her own way through school, she had success as a model, appearing on the cover of some of the top magazines.
