Grains on My Plate

Anne does not like to get up in the morning. She likes to stay up late. When her dad tells her to go to bed, she hides under the covers to read. On the weekend, she stays up late to watch television. Getting up in the morning is very hard for Anne.


Anne's favorite meal is breakfast. Some days that is the only reason she wants to get up! She loves breakfast foods. She likes eggs. She likes bacon. She likes sausage. She likes pancakes with syrup. She likes oatmeal. She likes grits. If she could, Anne would eat breakfast three times a day.


Many breakfast foods are made from grains. Anne eats a lot of things that are made from grains. Grains are one of five key food groups Anne needs to eat with every meal. Half the grains she eats should be whole grains. Whole grains do a lot for her body. They can reduce her risk of heart disease. There are many B vitamins in grains. Grains have iron, too, that our bodies need. Grains also help Anne feel full so she doesn't overeat.
