Gran's New Year

Caption: Fireworks are part of a Hogmanay celebration in Scotland.

"Gran, Gran!" cried Ian. "We're done cleaning now. Can you tell us a story?"

"Perhaps I can," said Gran.

"Gran, what was New Year's Day like for you when you were young?" asked Fiona.

"That was a different time and place," said Gran. She stared off in the distance over Fiona's shoulder. The little girl recognized the look as one her dad had when he was remembering. Fiona and Ian waited a few moments. Then their grandmother's attention snapped back.

"What would you be wanting to hear about the past for?" she asked.

"Dad said that New Year's in Scotland was much different than it is here," said Fiona.

"That is true," nodded Gran. "They are not so different now, though."

"How was it different?" asked Ian.
