Grandma's Secret Recipe

Fried Chicken Day

Reading Comprehension for July 6

Dear Pen Pal,

My name is Polly Lockheed, and I live in the South. I was glad to get your name from the Children's Fun Magazine, and I hope you will write to me. I would like to know a lot about you. First, I will tell you about myself.

I am seven years old and have lived in the South for my entire life. I was born in a different state from where we live now. However, my birth state is not far away. My grandparents still live there. We go there often.

I like to go to my grandparents' house. They always spoil me! In fact, I am there now. Each summer, I spend two weeks with them. I go for one week in June and one week in August.

One of my favorite parts about going to Grandma and Grandpa's house is Grandma's cooking. She is a great Southern cook, and her kitchen always smells so good! She bakes cookies and makes meatloaf (one of my favorites). I like to help her.

Grandma's fried chicken is especially good. I absolutely love it! Every time we have it, my fingers get greasy. I love the crispy skin. I'd like to learn how to make it myself. I think I'll go ask her and will write more later.

Later...

Hi again, Pen Pal. I asked my grandma if she would show me how to make fried chicken. She looked at me kind of funny and just said, "I'm not sure you're old enough to learn my secret recipe yet. I'll think about it." I don't know what the big deal is. I'll write you more tomorrow.

The next day...
