Grandpa's Pipe

Tobacco

Reading Comprehension for November 20

Jay liked to visit Grandpa on the farm. He liked the open spaces of fields. He liked the fresh smell of the air. Most of all he liked being with Grandpa.

Sometimes Grandpa would take him for rides on the tractor. Sometimes Grandpa would let Jay hand him tools while he fixed a machine. Jay's favorite thing was to sit on the back steps at sunset and just talk.

He was surprised when Grandpa pulled out a pipe from his pocket. He had never seen anything like it before. Grandpa put some little brown shavings in the wide end.

"What is that, Grandpa?" asked Jay.

Grandpa held a lit match to the wide end of the pipe and began to suck on the end in his mouth. Soon he was puffing small clouds of smoke from the corner of his mouth.

Grandpa held out the pipe. "This is a pipe. A good friend gave it to me many years ago." He smiled and whispered to Jay, "Your grandmother does not like it. She thinks it is very smelly."

"Is that why you smoke it out here?" asked Jay. "Will you teach me?"

Grandpa stopped and said nothing at first. He rested his pipe on his leg and closed his eyes.

"What is wrong, Grandpa?" asked Jay.
