Haley's Grouchy Birthday Party

National Grouch Day

Reading Comprehension for October 15

Haley walked into the living room with her head down and her shoulders drooping. "Hi, Mom. Hi, Ashley," she said as she headed for the hallway to her bedroom.

Her older sister, Ashley, called out to stop her. "Haley, what's wrong?"

Haley stopped and turned around. "Nothing. Why?"

Ashley glanced at Mom curiously. Then she turned to Haley. "Because your shoulders are nearly touching the floor!"

"Yeah," said Haley, and she turned to walk away again.

This time, Mom stopped Haley. "Haley, come here."

Haley turned and walked slowly to her mom. "Yes," she said sadly.

Mom put a finger under Haley's chin and lifted the young girl's face to hers. "Are you going to tell us what's wrong?"

"I don't want to," said Haley as a tear rolled down her cheek.

"Why?" asked Mom sympathetically.

Haley stomped her foot. "Because I don't want to be selfish."

"Selfish about what?" Ashley asked.

"My birthday!" said Haley.

Mom and Ashley looked at each other in surprise.
