How Many Oceans?

If you look at a globe, you will see a lot of blue. Blue represents the water on the Earth. About 71 percent of Earth's surface is covered with water. Almost all of that is salty ocean water. We have five named oceans. They are the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Indian, the Arctic, and the Southern Oceans. Looking at the globe, you can see that there is really just one big ocean. There is nothing to separate the water of the Pacific Ocean from the water of the Indian Ocean or the water of any other ocean. It is a good thing that the waters of the oceans do mix.
