How Much Is too Much?

Owen has been learning a lot about food. He knows about his diet. He knows that some foods have a lot of fat, and some have a lot of sugar. Too much fat and sugar can be very unhealthy. Owen looks at the nutrition labels on his food. He tries not to eat foods that have too much fat and sugar. He still likes chocolate shakes, though. Every once in a while he has one.

Owen has been doing a good job watching fats and sugars. Like many people, though, his diet has too much sodium. Sodium comes from a lot of places, including salt. Some salt is good for you. Sodium helps your body balance its fluids. It can help your nerves and muscles work better. Too much sodium can hurt your kidneys and your heart.

Salt is in many foods. Processed foods, like fast food and ready-made meals from the grocery store, have a lot of salt in them. Canned soup has a large amount of salt. One brand of canned chicken noodle soup has about 1,100 milligrams of sodium per cup. That's almost half the sodium you should get all day!
