How to Play Checkers

Board games are making a big comeback. One board game that has always been popular is checkers. In fact, checkers has been played for hundreds or maybe even thousands of years. Any game that has been around that long must be fun to play!

Checkers is played on a game board that consists of sixty-four squares in an eight by eight pattern. Squares alternate between a light and a dark color, traditionally red and black. The game pieces, called checkers, are round discs. Each of the two players has twelve checkers. One player has twelve red checkers, and the other player has twelve black checkers.

The object of the game is to capture all twelve of the opponent's checkers. A player can also win by trapping the opponent so that he is no longer able to move.

Each player sets up his side of the board with his twelve checkers. He fills up the black squares in the three back rows. To begin the game, black goes first. He moves one of his checkers forward one space in a diagonal direction onto another black square.
