Mrs. Danvers said, "Today we are going to learn about immigration. When someone comes to a new country to live, that is immigration. The people are called immigrants."
"My dad said that immigrants are not real Americans," John said.
"When they arrive in their new country, they are not citizens. That does not mean that they will never be citizens, though. Many immigrants have become American citizens," Mrs. Danvers said. "They studied hard. They took a test. Then they promised to obey the laws. They promised to be loyal to America. A judge told them that they were citizens."
"I'm not an immigrant," Patrick said.
"No, you are not," his teacher said. "You were born in this country, but your great-grandfather came here from Ireland. He was an immigrant."
"Silvia, do you know where your family came from?" Mrs. Danvers asked.
"Yes. My mother's family came from Mexico. My father's family came from there, too."
"How about you, Andrew? Where did your family come from?"
