The R.M.S. Titanic was a large ship. It was beautiful. Ruth Becker said it was "dazzling." She was a 12-year-old girl. She was traveling with her mother, brother, and sister. They were going back to the United States. Her father was a minister. They had been living in India. Her father was not with them. He was going to come later.


The Titanic was 11 stories high. It was as long as 3 football fields. The Titanic left from England. It was a clear and calm day. Ruth thought that it was fun to be on the Titanic. She took her little brother for walks around the ship.


On April 14, 1912, it got cold. There were huge pieces of ice called icebergs floating in the water. The ship had to be careful. That night, the Titanic hit an iceberg. Water rushed into the ship. It began to sink. Ruth saw scared people. She was never scared. She was excited.
