Koala (Not!) Bears

I had to squint to see it. It was the teeniest spider I had ever laid eyes on. Even still, I didn't want to touch it! As helpful as they can be, spiders still give me the willies! I tiptoed closer to its resting spot on the floor. I carefully leaned over and peered at the eight-legged creature. It was...not a spider! It was just a piece of lint. Oops! I had made a mistake.


Have you ever mistaken one thing for another? Long ago, European settlers in Australia did something similar. These early settlers spotted fluffy, furry animals climbing in the trees and assumed that they were bears. They were wrong! The settlers had seen koalas, not bears, but the name koala bear stuck. Many people still mistakenly call these climbing creatures koala bears, but that is incorrect .....
