After World War I, United States President Woodrow Wilson put a plan into place. He thought it would be much easier to keep peace in the world if all countries worked together. His idea was called the League of Nations. The aim of the League of Nations was "to promote international cooperation and to achieve peace and security." World powers worked together on this goal. Unfortunately, they were not able to prevent World War II. The League of Nations disbanded because of this failure.
During World War II, United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt called for a group of "united nations" to promote peace in the world. He first used the phrase "united nations" in a speech on the first of January in 1942. Because of this speech, twenty-six nations pledged to work together against the Axis nations led by Germany.
In 1945, after the war, representatives of fifty nations met in San Francisco, California. On October, 24, 1945, a charter was signed by these nations forming the United Nations. The aim was to work together to bring peace and security to the world.
Kofi Annan was the seventh person to lead the United Nations. His title was Secretary-General of the United Nations. He began his first term as Secretary-General on the first of January 1997. He began his second and final term of office in January 2002. Each term is five years in length.
