Let's Clean Up!

Pick Up Some Litter Day

Reading Comprehension for June 21

Andy and Jan sat on the park bench to have a snack. Andy pulled an apple out of his bag. Jan took a candy bar out of her pocket. She peeled off the wrapper and tossed it on the ground.

"Why did you do that?" asked Andy in a surprised tone.

"Why did I do what?" asked Jan.

"Throw your wrapper on the ground," said Andy.

"I don't know. I guess I didn't think about it," said Jan.

Andy leaned over and picked up the wrapper. He walked over to a trashcan and dropped the wrapper into the can. Then he came back to the bench and sat down.

"Did I upset you?" asked Jan.

"A little," said Andy. "I know you just moved here. Maybe where you used to live, people don't put their litter where it should go. It bothers me when people leave their trash on the ground. Look over there," said Andy, pointing to a small grove of trees. "Do you see the trash along the edge of the trees?"

"Yes," said Jan, humbly.

"That's what happens when people don't put their trash where it belongs," said Andy.

"I'm sorry," said Jan, hanging her head. "I never thought about it before. I guess I should put my litter in a trashcan."

"It's O.K. I have an idea though. I saw a sign over there about 'Pick up Some Litter Day'. Maybe we should sign up for it. It will be good to help clean up the park."

"I'll have to check with my mom, but it sounds like a great idea," said Jan.
