Lost Treasures

A Russian artist named Nicholas Roerich had a good idea. He wanted countries to agree to protect museums during war. He wanted to protect culture. Many people agreed with him and signed his treaty in 1935. It is too bad that people haven't always followed this plan. For example, a museum in Iraq lost many treasures during the war.

On April 10, 2003, robbers invaded the museum. American troops couldn't protect the museum. Fortunately, the staff had moved some items. They put some objects in the basement. They put other items in a bank vault. Still, looters found the artifacts. They stole thousands of them.
