Magnets Pull and Push

Maybe you have played with magnets. If so, you know that magnets can pull on some things.

Magnets attract some metals. That means that magnets pull towards them. Magnets are made of metals like iron. Some other metals like nickel, steel, and cobalt can be magnets, too. These are the kinds of metals that magnets attract. A magnet won't attract a penny. It won't attract a soft drink can. Some rocks are magnets. They are called lodestones.

Magnets can be any shape. They can be round or square. They can be rectangles. Some are shaped like a horse's shoe. All magnets have a north pole and a south pole. Earth has north and south poles, too. The Earth is a giant magnet!
