Maria Montessori and Her Method

Maria Montessori was born in Italy on August 31, 1870. She always seemed to be ahead of her time. She was the only girl in a boys' school. She studied science and math. She was the first woman in Italy to receive a medical degree. She became a doctor in 1896.

Maria worked at a clinic with special needs children. She decided that they could learn a lot more than even the experts thought.

In 1901, Maria became the director of a school for children with mental retardation. She gave the children activities that meant something. People noticed Maria's work when many of the children passed public school tests meant for sixth graders.
