Meg Cabot

Meg Cabot is an author who writes books for children and young adults. Even though she has also written for adults, her real passion is writing for young people. Cabot's books are especially popular with teenage girls. Her books, however, can be enjoyed by a wide audience.

Meg Cabot was born Meggin Patricia Cabot in Bloomington, Indiana, on February 1, 1967. As a young girl, she often went to her local library, initially just to get out of the heat and into the air conditioning. However, Meg soon became an avid reader, reading everything from comic books to science fiction and classic literature. She was also a typical young girl who dreamed of being a real-life princess. In an interview, Cabot said, "My parents used to joke that when I was little, I did a lot of insisting that my 'real' parents, the king and queen, were going to come get me soon." Her favorite fairy tale from childhood was Beauty and the Beast. As Meg got older, she was introduced to the world of romance when she read Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. The novel had an enormous impact on Meg, and it still influences her today, as both a reader and an author. According to Cabot, "It introduced me to the world of romance, which I have never left." Many years later, her fondness for princesses and romance launched her career through her immensely successful book, The Princess Diaries.

Meg's love for princesses continued into her high school years. During these years, she began writing her own diaries. She also started writing her stories as well as writing for the high school newspaper. Meg's writings, especially her diaries, would later impact her adult writing career. When Cabot wrote The Princess Diaries, she wasn't just influenced by her love of princesses. The voice of the main character actually evolved from Cabot's high school diaries.
