Melody's Own Dog

It was Melody's twelfth birthday. She was so excited. Her parents had promised her that when she reached 12 years old, they would get her a dog of her own. She had set her alarm for 7:00 A.M. She leapt out of bed when normally she took quite awhile to wake up. She went to her parents' room and tapped on her mom's shoulder.

"Mom? Get up! Can we go now?"

Mom yawned and turned over onto her side. "What time is it?" she said, rubbing her eyes.

"It's seven o'clock."

"It's seven o'clock on a Saturday morning? What are you doing up so early?"

"Today's the day we go to the humane society, remember?" Melody said.

Mom sighed and then smiled. "That means it must be your birthday, right?"

Melody grinned. "It sure is."

"Happy birthday, sweetheart."
