Not very long ago, Korea wasn't free. There was a time when another country ruled Korea. It was a time when Koreans weren't happy. Over many years, many Koreans had to fight for freedom. These times and those people are remembered on Hyun-chung-il. This is June 6, Memorial Day in South Korea.


The Korean peninsula is located in Southeast Asia. If you look at it on a map, you'll notice something interesting. The Korean peninsula is divided in half. There are two countries on the peninsula--North Korea and South Korea. It wasn't always this way - many years ago, there was one Korea.


Before World War II in the mid-20th century, Korea was ruled by Japan. Koreans didn't like this situation. The Japanese tried to force their culture on the Koreans. Koreans were made to learn Japanese. Many Koreans resisted such changes, even though resistance was illegal.
