Dear Diary,


I woke up this morning. It was 10:00 a.m. It was still dark outside. I am still trying to get used to it being dark. The sun does not rise all of the way here in the winter. Last night I saw beautiful lights in the sky. They were different colors. They are called the Northern Lights. Snow was falling. There was already 20 inches on the ground. The weatherman said it will keep snowing. Will we set a snowfall record? The record is 62 inches in 24 hours. More later...


On January 3, 1959, Alaska became a state. It was the 49th state in the U.S. Before it was a state, Alaska was a territory. A territory is like a state. It has a governor. But in a territory, the governor is not chosen by the people. The president says who the governor will be. The territory does not have a lot of power. The U.S. government has control.
