Muir Woods became a national monument about one hundred years ago. It is famous for its redwood and sequoia trees. These trees are the tallest living things on Earth. They make up an old-growth forest. Old-growth forests have old and large trees. The forest has three different layers. The layers are like a house. The bottom layer is like a carpet. The middle layer is like the furniture. The top layer is like the ceiling in a house. Dead trees are also a part of an old-growth forest. The things in an old-growth forest depend on each other.
