My New Red Shoes

Caption: Heather Hopkins on ABC's Good Morning, America

How do you begin a new school year? Most families shop for new school supplies. Most shop for new clothes. Most children begin the school year with at least one new pair of shoes. There are other children that do not do any of these things. Their families may not have money to spend on new items.

Heather Hopkins knew this was true after listening to a story about her mother's childhood. Heather's mother grew up in a poor family. Her mother did not look forward to the first day of school. She knew that she would not have anything presentable to wear. She did not want to go to school and face her teachers and classmates. This story inspired Heather to look at her own community.
