New Year's Goals

"Happy New Year!" Tracy said to her brother, Jim, as she peeked through the half-open bedroom door early on New Year's Day. Jim was still under the covers, just waking up.

Jim turned toward the door, yawning. "What?" he said sleepily.

"I said, 'Happy New Year'," Tracy repeated. "It's a new year. Come on, get up and at 'em!"

"Why?" Jim said, rubbing his eyes. "Leave me alone." Jim turned back over and covered his head with the blanket.

"Suit yourself," Tracy said as she bounded down the stairs. Jim had never been a morning person. Tracy was, especially on the first day of a new year. It always felt so fresh to her. She liked fresh starts. She always had lots of goals.

Tracy pulled out a box of cereal from the pantry and poured it into a bowl. Then she added some 2% milk. She set the cereal on the table and went to the kitchen desk to get a pad and pen.

For the next thirty minutes, Tracy enjoyed her cereal while she began writing goals for the new year. She loved to plan!

Mom came downstairs after awhile and started a pot of coffee. Standing in her pink robe, she said to Tracy, "What are you doing?"
